The Eiffel Tower
is an iron tower built on the Champ de Mars, beside the River
Seine, in Paris, France. It is the most famous French landmark and is
used as a symbol of France. At the time of its construction in 1889 it
was the tallest structure in the world, and remained so until 1930.
Named after its designer, engineer Gustave Eiffel, it is a premier
tourist destination, with over 7 million visitors per year.
The structure was built between 1887 and 1889. Three hundred workers
joined together 18,038 pieces of puddled iron, using two and a half
million rivets, in a structural design by Maurice Koechlin. The risk of
accident was great, for unlike modern skyscrapers the tower is an open
frame without any intermediate floors except the two platforms. Yet,
because Eiffel took good care of his workers with movable stagings,
guard-rails and screens, only one man died (during the installation of
Otis Elevator's lifts). The tower is 986 feet tall.
|
|
The views from its three levels are extraordinary—well
worth the wait in line. The interior lighting system makes the tower
look like a big golden candle at night. Every hour on the hour, the
tower shimmers and sparkles for 10 minutes (from nightfall to 1 am in
winter and till 2 am in summer). September to mid-June daily 9:30
am-11:45 pm; mid-June to 31 August daily 9 am-12:45 am. The last
entrance is 45 minutes before closing time.
Admission is 13 euros to go to the top (3rd level) by elevator, or 8
euros to access just the first and second levels (by elevator); 4.50
euros to climb the stairs to the first and second levels. Reduced fees
for handicapped and ages 4-24; free for children younger than 4. Expect
to wait at least an hour when taking elevators. However, since we are a
group with a reservation, we'll bypass the lines!

Tour of Paris

10:30 Ride the Elevator
up!
Riding the elevator to the 2nd and 3rd levels of the Eiffel tower can
be a very "breathtaking"
experience. Are you afraid of heights?
Take a few minutes to look at pictures
of the elevator cars.
Now it's time to get in line. Since we're a large group, we will be
splitting into two groups. Each group will go in a seperate elevator
car. Choose which group you will be in and head on up to the top!
|

|
|
The elevators can move both up and
down at two different
angles to match the angles of the tower's legs. The double decked
elevators in
the north, east, and west piers are generally comparable; the one in
the south
pier is used to take Jules Verne (restaurant) customers from the ground
level up to the
restaurant itself. This pier also contains the stairway between the
ground and
second levels.
